Position description
The Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) assists the surgeon in the performance of surgical procedures. The CSA has an understanding of human surgical anatomy; has developed surgical skills such as suturing, the proper use of surgical instrumentation, and proper positioning of surgical patients. You will need to possesses a working knowledge of the principles of aseptic technique, and perioperative policies and procedural guidelines. As well, you are required to know surgical procedures and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
Qualifications
A Certified Surgical Assistant at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota will need to:
  1. be a Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) Surgical Assistant program
  2. be currently certified as a Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) through NCCSA (National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants) or a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
  3. have relevant operating room experience or training within the past 3 years
Additional qualifications
Were looking for someone who adapts to unpredictable situations within the perioperative setting. Also someone with the proven ability to communicate with a variety of people in a direct, empathetic, and articulate manner. Our CSA’s demonstrate patient-centered and customer focused communication skills and have the ability to work independently and as a team member with minimal supervision.
License or certification
Must obtain prior to start date:
Must be a Certified Surgical Assistant in good standing with the National Surgical Assistant Association or the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

Basic Cardiac Life Support for healthcare providers- BCLS – certificate of course completion required and must not expire within 3 months after start date. A scanned copy of the certificate of completion or transcripts, including your full name, must be attached to your profile to be considered.

We will only accept certificates of course completion from the following providers:
  • American Heart Association (Title: BLS for Healthcare Providers or BLS Provider)
  • Red Cross (Title: CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers or BLS for Healthcare Providers)
  • Military Training Network
Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
