Mental Health Advanced Practice Nurse (APN)-OC

The APN is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the patient's medical care in collaboration with psychiatrists, ED staff and other medical professionals in the Medical Center. He/she provides direct patient care. The IHAH APN is expected to provide direct patient care by performing comprehensive psychiatric assessments on an urgent or routine basis after hours within the Medical Center. The incumbent will admit and plan initial treatment for a variety of patients. Admission will include physical exam as well as a complete Mental Status Exam and write complete admission orders to include laboratory studies and medication as necessary. The incumbent works primarily in the Mental Health Service and prioritizes those requests, but initially also is available after hours to the Hospice and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation unit. Hospitalists are available for consultation regarding medical issues as needed. The incumbent will formulate differential diagnoses based on findings using the current addition of the DSM; prescribing pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in the direct management of acute and chronic diseases; promotion of wellness and the prevention of illness. 

The incumbent focuses on new admission work ups routine and urgent as requested, follow-up, documentation of progress notes whenever a clinical condition requires an intervention, ordering diagnostic studies, as well as the education of veterans, family and staff.  

The APN is responsible for the teaching of concepts and clinical skills within his/her area of expertise of students from local, regional and national medical, nursing and pharmacy school(s). Additionally the APN participates in QA activities, peer review, medical record reviews; meets timeliness for documentation and productivity standards; protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statues and policy.


This is a bargaining unit position.

Work Schedule: Odd Tours, weekends and holidays may be required.
