JOB TITLE:    Nurse Manager

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:        Responsible for planning and coordinating the daily activities of the nursing staff ensuring proper coverage in all areas.  In doing so, obtains and analyses department work load data to plan and schedule daily nursing staff to meet the needs of each location.  Ensures adequate level of staffing by interviewing, recommending hiring of, orienting and training nursing staff.  Evaluates the performance of staff in conjunction with the physicians and administrator.  Responsible for ensuring the practice’s compliance with OSHA, CLIA regulations. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Reports to Administrator

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for managing the nursing staff of the different departments and locations, ensuring the needs of each are met.

  1. Responsible for interviewing, recommending the hiring of, orientation, training, work assignments, and, when necessary, disciplines and recommends termination.  Interacts with Administrator in resolving complex employee relations problems. 
  2. Evaluates the performance of subordinates by monitoring individual work performance and obtaining feedback from patients, physicians, and other personnel in order to accurately evaluate employees.
  3. Conducts special projects and studies as directed by administrator and physicians.
  4. Attends weekly business meetings.  In doing so, communicates information effectively to staff and appropriate persons.
  5. Monitors daily operating activity of the department such as work load, staff productivity, and effectively plans future department resources.
  6. Responsible for maintaining properly operating medical equipment and instruments and contacting appropriate personnel for repairs.
  7. Acts as program chairperson responsible for ensuring the practice’s compliance with OSHA regulations.  Ensures that all employee health and training records are accurate and up to date.  Handles work related injury reporting.
  8. Regularly contacts and communicates with clinical staff at satellite offices in order to identify and resolve problems.
  9. Maintains knowledge of trends and developments in the field.
  10. Assures clinical staff compliance with National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) structure and standards, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecology (ACOG) SCOPE Standards requirements, American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), and any other practice accreditation standards.
  11. Reviews, edits, and approves clinical staff paid time off, reviews and approves timesheets.
  12. Maintain EMR order sets for labs and encounter plans.

 Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1. Oversees clinical nursing care, ensuring compliance with established regulations and standards including quality assurance, confidentiality, and medical record documentation.
  2. Provides direct supervision to nurses and subordinate staff, ensuring appropriate assessment and treatment of patient health. Serves as key problem-solving resource for staff on patient issues. Studies patient needs/trends and suggests solutions to ongoing patient care problems.
  3. Collaborates with administrator on development and implementation of nursing department’s mission, goals, policies, procedures, quality assurance plan, and work standards.
  4. Compiles/analyzes data on patient outcomes, quality assurance results, and performance/productivity and prepares reports for administration.
  5. Participates in medical practice planning related to clinic and emergency/disaster response system.
  6. Analyzes staffing patterns with administrator. Responsible for recruiting, selecting, orienting/training, and evaluating nursing staff.

Education: BSN from accredited school of nursing. 

Experience: Minimum five years of professional nursing experience including two years supervisory-level experience, preferably in medical practice setting.  Experience in a labor and delivery department or ob/gyn practice strongly preferred.

Other Requirements: Current state RN license. Current CPR certificate.

  2. Knowledge of supervisory, human resources, and quality-improvement principles and techniques.
  3. Knowledge of clinical state-of-the-art advancements and trends in health care.
  4. Knowledge of principles of employee development to ensure appropriate training and mentoring of staff.

Skills:

  1. Skill in applying and modifying, as appropriate, the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing.
  2. Skill in identifying problems, researching, and recommending solutions.
  3. Skill in developing and maintaining high level of quality care/quality assurance.

Abilities:

  1. Ability to manage the overall provision of nursing services and build consensus among staff.
  2. Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals at all levels of the medical practice.
  3. Ability to handle many tasks simultaneously and deal effectively with changing priorities.
  4. Ability to demonstrate full range of motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye–hand coordination.

Equipment Operated: Standard nursing equipment and office equipment including computer hardware and software.

 Work Environment: Combination of office, exam, and other clinical settings. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic setting.

 Mental/Physical Requirements: Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasional stress caused by multitasking and level of responsibility.

 The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to job position.
