Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital (http://www.hines.va.gov/), located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago on a 147-acre campus, offers primary, extended and specialty care and serves as a tertiary care referral center for VISN 12. Specialized clinical programs include Blind Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, Neurosurgery, Radiation Therapy and Cardiovascular Surgery. The hospital also serves as the VISN 12 southern tier hub for pathology, radiology, radiation therapy, human resource management and fiscal services.

Hines VAH currently operates 483 beds and six community based outpatient clinics in Aurora, Hoffman Estates, Joliet, Kankakee, LaSalle, and Oak Lawn. Over 800,000 patient visits occurred in fiscal year 2016 providing care to over 59,000 veterans, primarily from Cook, DuPage and Will counties.

This current vacancies are 2nd shift 3:30 PM to Midnight and 3rd shift 11:30PM to 8:00AM, with rotating weekdays, weekends and holidays, located in the Spinal Cord Injury Section of the Nursing Service at the Hines VA Medical Center. This announcement may be used to fill additional 2nd and 3rd shift Nursing Assistant vacancies throughout the Hines VA Medical Center for the next 90 days.

The Nursing Assistant is an integral part of the care team in providing care to veterans at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Medical Center. The Nursing Assistant is responsible for the delivery of patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Advance Practice Nurse/Physician Assistant, or Physician.

Work Schedule: 2nd shift, 3:30 PM to Midnight -or-3rd shift, 11:30 PM to 8:00 AM, includes rotating weekdays, weekends and holidays.

Duties

Nursing Assistant duties include but are not limited to:
-Practices within the scope and certification of a CNA in the nursing unit, clinic, area of assignment and demonstrates consistent practice when temporarily assigned to related nursing units and clinics.
-Provides care and services to multiple populations served and admitted to the nursing unit, clinic, area of assignment as determined by the patient/resident need for nursing care and services.
-Provides direct patient/resident care in the provision of the psychological, physical, social and cultural activities of daily living, both complete and supportive.
-Provides for the care of patients/residents with dignity and continuous consideration of the individual's emotional needs.
-Provides reporting, communication and documentation in the computerized patient record system with other members of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team.
-Maintains certification, BCLS, and currency in required education and training as identified by regulating agencies, VA Medical Center, VISN and National Agencies.
-Demonstrates competency and consistency in the technical use of equipment, application of technical standards and performance of administrative support duties.
-Provides assistance and support to the Registered Nurse and/or provider.
-Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide care and services consistent with Infection Control Standards of Practice providing optimal outcomes for patients, residents, visitors, and employees.
-Recognizes, responds and initiates appropriate level response to medical emergency such as cardiac and/or respiratory failure.
-Other related duties as assigned.

    • BASIC REQUIREMENTS: The following are the basic requirements and qualifications for this position:

      English Language Proficiency

      GS-3 Basic Requirement - Education or Training (Entry Level): One year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation. Transcripts Required
      OR

      Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirement. Transcripts Required

      Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above the following is the experience or education requirement to qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level.

      Experience: At least one full year of progressively responsible assignments and experience as a Nursing Assistant at the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment.
      OR
      Education
      : Successful completion of a 4 -year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree. Transcripts Required if qualifying based on education.

      AND

      Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

      (1) Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
      (2) Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new Nursing Assistants by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
      (3) Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

      Physical Requirements: Physical requirements include extensive periods of standing and walking. Duties involve strenuous physical exertion on a regular basis. Patient care activities require regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing and similar activities using appropriate body mechanics and other assistive devices for patient and/or equipment movement and transfer. The employee protects self and others from injury. Considerable agility and dexterity is required to provide care in a proper and safe manner.
