Position Summary: The WOC nurse's focus is the quality of care provided for individuals with ostomies, fistulas, draining wounds, tubes, altered skin integrity and incontinence. Facilitates the rehabilitation and health maintenance of these individuals and their families through assessment of needs, education, counseling, and coordination of care. Working collaboratively with other health care professionals, the WOC nurse functions in the roles of care provider, educator and consultant in a variety of settings throughout the medical center. Through leadership, education, and management responsibilities, the WOC nurse strives to further the clinical specialty.

Responsibilities: The Wound Ostomy Nurse (WON) provides expert, integrated, cost-effective quality patient care through the coordination of clinical care for high-risk patients with complex issues across the continuum of care settings. This nurse integrates knowledge of advanced pathophysiology, human responses to health problems and non-disease based etiologies to assess, plan and coordinate care, monitor and evaluate patient outcomes. The WON supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. Working collaboratively with other health care professionals, the WON functions in the roles of care provider, educator and consultant in a variety of settings throughout the medical center. The WON will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The WON provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The WON possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and participates on committees or projects. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice and the Scope and Standards for Wound, Ostomy and Continence Specialty Practice Nursing provide a basis for the practice of the WON.

Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited baccalaureate, associate, or diploma nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN- formerly NLN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN or CCNE, at least one year of RN experience (within the last 5 years) in an applicable care setting is required.

All associate degree or diploma registered nurses hired into the Department of Nursing with a RN start date after September 1, 2010, must provide documented evidence of program completion of their baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within 5 years from the last day of the month of their RN start date.

Additional Qualifications: Certification in wound and continence nursing preferred.
  • Certification in wound and continence nursing preferred.
  • If not currently practicing as a WOC RN, two years successful work experience in medical-surgical nursing within the past five years required.
  • Demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge and competence in specialty area.
  • Ability to collect, compare, sort, and prioritize information to be used in the decision-making process for patients and staff.
  • Ability to manage stress and complex problem-solving issues.
  • Ability to be self-directed.
  • Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills.

License or Certification: Current RN license by applicable state requirements.

Completion of WOCN education program (or completion within the first 6-12 months). Certification in ostomy nursing (or completion within the first 6-12 months).

Arizona and Florida: Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.

Midwest: Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs: American Heart Association; American Red Cross.

Compensation Detail: Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $30.87 per hour.
Hours/Pay Period: 40 hours per 2 week pay period
Schedule Details: Monday – Friday, Days, 8-hour shifts – NOT NEGOTIABLE
Weekend Schedule: Occasional Saturday (approximately every 6th Saturday) – NOT NEGOTIABLE
