Unit Description

GroupBox1

6SW is a 30 bed neuro/trauma unit where staff members primarily provide care for patients with neurologic disorders and those who have been victims of traumatic events, including orthopedic injuries. In addition, cardiac overflow patients may be cared for on this unit. The unit consists of 28 semi-private rooms and two isolation rooms. All rooms have the capability of telemetry and continuous pulse oximetry monitoring. Our team consists of patient care partners and Registered Nurses who work together to provide the best care possible to our patient population. There is an active Unit Council on 6SW that is responsible for guiding patient and staff satisfaction.

Main Function

The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Robert Packer Hospital Nursing Professional Practice Model. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects.

Requirements

Graduate of an Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program. Nurses hired who have not earned a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing, will be required to do so within five (5) years from their date of hire.

The RN must be currently licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and must successfully complete a medication and IV exam, as outline by the hospital, during the orientation period.

The RN must maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.  Specialty certification, RN-BC M/S, or TCRN should be achieved as soon as the RN is eligible. Specialty certification/training as required by specific units or specialty includes: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), PALS, and Trauma training within the first year after hire.

One year RN experience within the last five years preferred. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) desired. Experience working in a team environment is essential.
