Position description
The Ambulatory Care Registered Nurse (RN) is accountable for the delivery of direct patient care including patient education in the outpatient setting.

The RN working in the GI Endoscopy practice on Gonda 9 South and Alfred Main provides care for adult patients. RN’s can function in one of two areas, with the potential of cross-coverage as needed.

RNs in the GI Endoscopy practice are expected to work in all three direct patient care phases; Pre-Procedure (Intake), Intra-Procedure (Procedures) and Post-Procedure (Recovery).

RNs working in Intake are responsible for completing a GI focused history and patient assessment prior to their endoscopy procedure. In this capacity, RNs will provide patient education for endoscopic procedures; review the medical history, including the current medication list and allergies to ensure the patient is able to proceed with their scheduled endoscopy procedure.

RNs working in Procedures are responsible for reviewing the GI focused history and patient assessment gathered by the Intake RN. In this capacity, RNs will provide Moderate Sedation under the direction of the Physician; provide physiologic monitoring and airway management of the sedated patient and respond to emergency situations in the procedure room.

RNs working in Recovery are responsible for monitoring patients post-sedation. In this capacity, RNs will continue physiologic monitoring until patient meets discharge criteria.

This environment is fast-paced, highly unpredictable and requires extreme attention to detail. The role requires expert critical thinking, attention to detail, time management, multi-tasking and the ability to function autonomously in an unpredictable environment. The ability to comfortably manage multiple computer applications is essential.

All RNs are trained to interpret ECG rhythms and will be expected to attain ACLS certification within their first 3-6 months of employment.

The RN is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and adequacy of resources. The RN must possess excellent communication skills, be skillful in mentoring and teaching and actively participate on committees or projects.
