Registered Nurse - Surgical/Telemetry (3N) - Head Nurse (Nurse Manager)

The individual selected is accountable for adhering to established standards of care, practice, policies, and procedures, and for demonstrating leadership to improve patient care at the unit level. He/She is responsible for the administration, management, supervision and evaluation of patient care personnel. The individual selected will be active in orienting, educating, coaching and mentoring staff, will possess strong clinical skills and will motivate staff utilizing staff input to develop a strong team atmosphere on the unit. He/She will effectively deal with staff conflict, effectively communicate with all levels of staff, and maintain excellent relationships with support staff.


WORK SCHEDULE: Full- Time 7:30AM-4PM; Administrative Days with on-call for off tours, weekends/holidays based on upon needs of the unit.

  • This is a Head Nurse position. Selectee is subject to Head Nurse Pay while occupying this position. Head Nurse Pay Schedule Range: $79,746 - $142-569. Selectee will sign Memo of Understanding during on-boarding.
  • In the event the Head Nurse moves to a Staff Nurse position, Head Nurse Pay is no longer applicable, and he/she is placed on the Staff Nurse Pay Schedule at the current grade and step.
  • This position is covered by a special rate.
  • Travel and relocation expenses are not authorized.
  • Selectee may be required to work at any Boston Healthcare System campus, as needed.
  • Candidates who meet the qualification requirements within 15 calendar days following the closing date of the announcement will be considered.
  • This position is in the Excepted Service.
  • Permanent appointment in this position is subject to review by the Nurse Professional Standards Board. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.
  • Drug Testing Position:  Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.  Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.  Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50 (Notice of Personnel Action).  The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted).  In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.
  • Selectee will be required to complete additional forms to proceed with employment process.
  • Position is not required to file a financial disclosure report.
