Position Summary:
The Orlando VA Medical Center is seeking for an innovative, energetic nurse leader for this important nursing management role. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Nurse Manager holds the responsibility for implementation of the Vision, Mission and Values of Orlando VA Healthcare Center within his/her defined areas of responsibility. He/she is engaged in administrative nursing practice characterized by both increased complexity of clinical decision making and enhanced skill in nursing management. The Nurse Manager provides leadership in day-today operations of a 22 bed Medical and Surgical Bed ICU and input into the strategic planning process for the attainment of organizational goals. The ICU Nurse Manager keeps staff informed of Orlando VAMCs administrative goals through facilitating both vertical and horizontal communication in a timely manner. The incumbent provides timely information regarding emergencies, unusual occurrences or issues that impact on nursing practice or operations to the Nurse Executive/Associate Director Patient Care Services. He/she provides direct supervision of nursing personnel in their defined area of responsibility and evaluates their performance and competency. The incumbent is knowledgeable concerning the disciplinary process and keeps his/her supervisor abreast of such actions. The ICU Nurse Manager is responsible for all issues that affect nursing including standards of practice, credentialing, training, functional statement, position descriptions, proficiency reports, performance appraisals, policies, procedures, protocols and competencies. He/she ensures appropriate orientation, education and continuing professional development of nursing personnel supervised. He/she plays a key role in the ongoing systematic evaluation and improvement of the quality and effectiveness of nursing care and services as they affect patient outcomes. This Nurse Manager will report directly to the Chief Nurse for Critical Care, VAMC Orlando.



Duties

Work Schedule: Normal work days/hours will be Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with work day/hours flexibility required as patient care needs require.

Environmental Factors: Inside work, Constant noise, Dust, Fumes, smoke or gases, Working closely with others, Protracted or irregular hours of work, Exposure to infectious diseases.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of thefollowing accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
      Preferred Experience:
      • Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field strongly preferred.
      • A minimum of five (5) years of successful nursing clinical practice, with at least one (1) year of recent nursing management
      • CCRN certification highly preferred. Nurse Executive (NE-BC) certification highly preferred.
      • Demonstrated skills in effectively managing human resources in previous assignments.
      • Demonstrated skills in effectively collaborating with and directing multidisciplinary teams in previous assignments.
      • Knowledge of computer systems and standard software programs required for use in ICU and Nurse Manager role.
      • Demonstrated skills in managing complex systems, with advanced organizational skills.
      • Advanced skills in oral and written communications.
      • Knowledge and understanding of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) regulations/policies/procedures, current Joint Commission standards, and other current internal and external accrediting body standards.
      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
      • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse III - Master's egree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
      References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

      Physical Requirements: The incumbent of the position performs direct patient care and must meet the below physical requirements to
