Job Title: Trauma Program Manager

Job Summary:

Provides leadership and management for the trauma service at Hospital for the day to day operations. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure trauma standards are met and optimal patient care outcomes for trauma patients are achieved. In collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director (TMD), ensures the trauma services meet or exceed the regulatory requirements of the American College of Surgeons as a Level II Trauma Center and develops and maintains a robust performance improvement process/plan for the trauma service. Provides oversight and support to the Trauma Nurse Coordinator (TNC) and the Injury Prevention Team. Ensures the trauma data base is up to date. Develops and manages the Trauma Program budget in collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director. Able to perform all functions of the Trauma Nurse Coordinator.


  • Oversees and manages the day to day operations of the Trauma service.
  • Coordinates with the Trauma Nurse Coordinator to ensure the trauma data base is up to date (within 60 days).
  • Collaborates with the TMD to ensure quality of care issues are identified and addressed. Ensures loop closure of all identified issues related to performance improvement. Ensures appropriate documentation of PI and loop closure.
  • Prepares for all trauma performance improvement meetings including necessary chart reviews, pre-meeting with TMD to prepare, meeting invites, meeting paperwork/preparation to facilitate medical review of charts. Ensures meeting minutes are complete and necessary documentation is entered in the trauma data base.
  • Maintains a robust injury prevention program and trauma community outreach activities.
  • Utilizes evidence base practice and critical thinking in chart review and performance improvement.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary rounds on all trauma patients.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of trauma protocols and policies.
  • Serves as a resource to pre-hospital and hospital personnel involved in the care and management of the trauma patient.
  • Develops and manages the trauma budget in collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director.
  • Collaborates with the Emergency Management Coordinator to ensure a quality emergency management program.
  • Clinical Nursing Skills: Demonstrates Emergency Nursing Skills in compliance with AVH policy, TJC, CMS, CAH Standards and NPSG. Skills include: introduction, timely triage, compassionate care, complete and accurate documentation, medication safety, appropriate and timely reassessment.
  • Technical Nursing Skills: Demonstrates competency and knowledge of equipment and procedures commonly performed in the ED and Trauma Room. Maintains all required certifications.




  • Adheres reliably to all accepted patient safety standards.
  • Identifies and promotes new learning around changing patient safety standards of practice.
  • Serves in advocacy role; encouraging active involvement of patient and family in their care.
  • Prioritizes patient’s situations and takes appropriate action in an efficient, effective manner.
  • Makes value-added resource decision for patient care with respect to supplies, equipment and acuity of care.


  • Ensures all trauma services meet or exceed the regulatory requirements and reporting requirements of the Colorado Department of Health and Environment as a Level III Trauma Center and TJC standards. Coordinates preparations for the trauma center designations visits.
  • Adheres to federal, state and hospital rules and regulations concerning HIPAA privacy and security.
  • Follows Hospital compliance plan and policies, including the Code of Conduct.
  • Develops, revises and reviews policies annually in collaboration with the TMD and trauma department and assesses care/documentation for compliance with policies.
  • Maintains documentation of hospital wide staff and physicians
  • Assures that appropriate transfer agreements exist to provide for transfer to higher acuity trauma centers and/or specialty care facilities.
  • Participates in required training for compliance related activities (HIPAA, Compliance, Patient Safety, etc.)

  • Demonstrates role awareness and seeks individualized/department specific continuing education that improves patient care or professional practice.
  • Maintains and improves knowledge of trauma care through continuing education, literature reviews, membership in professional organizations and attendance at conferences/meetings with the purposes of communicating advances in trauma care to staff providing trauma care and to improve scrutiny of trauma care provided at this facility.
